Read and Colour is a first reader app book which is designed by qualified teachers to encourage independent reading in pre-school and early primary school aged children.

Being teachers and having young children of our own, we struggled to find a 3-6 age reading app that ticked all the boxes so we decided to write our own.  We discovered from other parents with young kids that, like us, they wanted an app that was:

  • reasonably priced

  • no in-app purchases

  • no adverts

  • nothing locked

  • didn't need internet connection

  • accessible to young children

  • encouraged independent reading

  • enabled pre-school kids to get a head start with learning the sounds of all the letters

As well as the first reader story with colour in illustrations, Read & Colour has the additional functionality of tap the sound, sound practice, shape practice and tap to read common words.

Designed to encourage independent reading in young children, Read & Colour enables them to use tap to sound words or tap individual sounds to read the word.

We know that kinesthetic learners learn best when combining thought and attention with physical movement.
Shape practice allows kids to swipe away the balloons and simultaneously gain familiarity with the shapes of letters and how to write them.

At an early stage it is useful for children to have some notion of the different parts of speech.  Our 126 common words are thus divided.  The idea is that children practise reading the words and then tap to see if they are right.  The words are carefully chosen to be those with which a child is already familiar such as cuddle, mess, sing, laugh, tantrum etc.

Simply tap the letter to hear its sound.
Again, the idea is that children practise reading the sounds and then tap to see if they are right.

We know from our own experience that three-year-olds can get very good at this.  Tap the sound asks the child verbally to tap one of the three letters.  Tap the correct one and get a 'well done!'.

So that's Read & Colour.  We hope you enjoy our app and your kids get as much happy learning from it as the real Milly, Max and Molly did!
